What Is an AI Voice Agent?

A plain-English explanation for Indian business owners: how AI voice agents work, what they can and cannot do, and what they cost.

1. The short answer

An AI voice agent is software that holds a real phone conversation. It listens to the caller, understands what they mean and replies out loud in a natural voice — in Hindi, English or a mix of both. Unlike an IVR ("press 1 for sales") there are no menus: the caller just talks. Businesses use AI voice agents to call leads, answer enquiries, book appointments, send reminders and collect payments, and every outcome is logged in a CRM.

2. How it works on a call

Three things happen in a loop, many times a second. 1) Listening: the agent turns the caller's speech into meaning, including Hinglish and regional accents. 2) Thinking: a large language model decides what to say next, using your script, your product knowledge base and the conversation so far. 3) Speaking: the reply is generated as natural speech and played on the call. Good platforms do this speech-to-speech in well under a second, so the conversation does not feel robotic.

The agent can also act during the call: book a slot in a calendar, send a WhatsApp message, update a lead's status or transfer the call to a person.

3. AI voice agent vs IVR vs chatbot

An IVR plays recorded menus and routes calls; it cannot hold a conversation. A chatbot converses, but in text, on a website or WhatsApp. An AI voice agent converses by voice on a normal phone call — still how most Indian customers prefer to talk to a business, especially outside the metros. Many businesses use all three: IVR for routing, chatbots for web traffic, and voice agents for outbound calling and inbound calls that need a real conversation.

4. What businesses use them for

The repetitive calls teams struggle to keep up with: calling every new lead within minutes (real estate, education, insurance, automobile), appointment booking and reminders (clinics, hospitals, salons), payment and EMI reminders (lenders, distributors), COD order confirmation (e-commerce), candidate screening (recruitment), and feedback after a purchase or service. The AI handles volume and consistency; your team takes over for complex sales, disputes and anything that needs judgement.

5. What they cannot do (yet)

AI voice agents are best at structured conversations with a clear goal. They do not replace a senior salesperson in a complex negotiation, and they should hand off when a caller is upset, asks for a person or raises something outside the script. Good platforms make the hand-off easy with live transfer and call notes. Voice quality and language support also vary a lot between vendors, so always test a live call in the languages your customers speak.

6. What it costs in India

There are two pricing models. Per-minute pricing charges for every minute of talk time; global platforms usually quote it in US dollars and bill telephony separately. Per-channel pricing charges a flat monthly fee for each line that can be on a call at the same time, with unlimited minutes. On BOLIFY AI a channel costs ₹9,999 a month with unlimited calls (₹24,999 a month for 3 channels), or you can pay as you go at ₹3.20 per answered minute; prices exclude 18% GST. Per-channel pricing usually works out cheaper once you use more than about 3,000 answered minutes a month.

7. How to choose one

1) Ask for a live test call in Hindi or Hinglish, not a recorded demo. 2) Listen for pauses — replies should come in under a second. 3) Check telephony: Indian phone numbers and DLT-compliant routes. 4) Check whether CRM and WhatsApp follow-ups are built in or extra. 5) Ask how consent, recordings and data deletion are handled under the DPDP Act. 6) Price it at your real call volume, including telephony and GST. 7) Make sure the agent can transfer to a person. 8) Use the free trial — BOLIFY AI's is 14 days or 50 calls, whichever comes first.
